First character Confirmed
The first confirmed main character is the young woman seen in the Eł trailer. Jump Festa 2007 confirmed that her name is "Lightning", though Famitsu magazine states that that is only a codename and that she will probably only use it for parts of the game. Toriyama recently stated in an interview that the character only calls herself Lightning to keep her true name a secret. He also stated that the reason will be revealed in the plot.
Previous Final Fantasy installments the main characters have always been named after natural phenomena. Such as Cloud from Final Fantasy VII and Squall from Final Fantasy VIII. Tidus and Yuna (Sun and Moon in Okinawan language) from Final Fantasy X. The character "Lightning" follows this pattern.
Second Character Confirmed
Jump Festa 2007 has confirmed a presense for a second character. A blond bandana-wearing male who rides a motorcycle and uses a gun to come to Lightning's aid when she is in trouble. The character's name is related also to weather, and that he is not related to Lightning in any way. The blond male and Lightning are confirmed to have a unique relationship by Toriyama. The blonde male has been described by the game staff as "cowboy-like".
